An open weave in black or linen, bound at every edge, with straps long enough to sit on your shoulder over a folded towel.

Light comes through it, and so does the afternoon. You can see the towel and the hat and the bottle of water without opening anything, and you can shake the beach out of it on the way back to the car.

Inside there's a lined pocket that zips, for the things you'd rather not see through the weave — keys, phone, a little cash.

It stands up when it's full and softens when it isn't. Big enough for two towels and everything that comes with them.

Spot clean first. Warm water, a drop of mild soap, a soft cloth, working in
small circles. Most marks come out this way, and it's far kinder to the fabric
than a full wash.

If it really needs more, hand wash in cold water. Never the machine, never the
dryer, never bleach.

Reshape it while it's damp and let it dry flat, away from direct sun.

Woven and straw bags shouldn't be washed at all. Wipe them, keep them dry, and
they'll hold their colour for years.

Store it with a little tissue paper inside so it keeps its shape — and empty the
pockets before you put it away for the season.

A bag you carry every day will soften and fade a little. That's it settling in,
not wearing out.
