It's wider than it looks in a photograph — forty-one centimetres across and fourteen deep, which is a rolled towel, a book, sun cream and a bottle of water, with room left over.

And it closes. A zip along the top, a lining inside, and a small pocket for your phone so it doesn't spend the day at the bottom under everything else.

Straw that behaves like a handbag.

Natural or tan. Wipe it clean, keep it dry, and it holds its colour.

Spot clean first. Warm water, a drop of mild soap, a soft cloth, working in
small circles. Most marks come out this way, and it's far kinder to the fabric
than a full wash.

If it really needs more, hand wash in cold water. Never the machine, never the
dryer, never bleach.

Reshape it while it's damp and let it dry flat, away from direct sun.

Woven and straw bags shouldn't be washed at all. Wipe them, keep them dry, and
they'll hold their colour for years.

Store it with a little tissue paper inside so it keeps its shape — and empty the
pockets before you put it away for the season.

A bag you carry every day will soften and fade a little. That's it settling in,
not wearing out.
